Advice and information regarding the leap second change on December 31st 2016

Introduction

On 31st December 2016 one second will be added to coordinated universal time (UTC). However GPS time will not be adjusted, meaning that a one second correction (leap second) will be added to the navigation message transmitted by satellites in order to synchronize these times. Before the change 17 leap seconds were transmitted, after the change 18 leap seconds will be transmitted.

Recommendations

We recommend that the latest version of onboard software is installed together with the latest ME (measurment engine) firmware. These combinations have been tested and can be seen in the table below.

Sensor Onboard firmware version Measurement engine firmware version
 GS25  SmartWorx Viva 6.04  (ME4) 6.521, (OEM7) 7.001
 GS16  SmartWorx Viva 6.04  7.001
 GS15  SmartWorx Viva 6.04  (ME4) 6.521, (OEM7) 7.001
 GS14  SmartWorx Viva 6.04  6.510
 GS12  SmartWorx Viva 6.04 (on controller)  6.402
 GS10  SmartWorx Viva 6.04  (ME4) 6.521, (OEM7) 7.001
 GS08plus  SmartWorx Viva 6.04/Captivate 2.10 (on controller)  6.402
 GS08  SmartWorx Viva 6.04 (on controller)  (ME4) 6.402
 GS05/06  SmartWorx Viva 6.04 (on controller)  1.13 (46)
 GX1200 series  SmartWorx 9.02  (ME3) 3.823, (ME4) 6.112
 ATX1200 series  SmartWorx 9.02 (on controller)  (ME3) 3.823, (ME4) 6.112
 GS09 series  SmartWorx 9.02 (on controller)  (ME3) 3.823, (ME4) 6.112
 GPS900 series  SmartWorx 9.02 (on controller)  (ME3) 3.823, (ME4) 6.112

Expected behaviour for sensors running older onboard firmware but with latest ME firmware

Please note that no other combinations of onboard and measurement engine firmware have been tested than those listed in the table above. There are too many combinations to make this feasible so therefore we strongly recommend that the latest of each is installed on the sensor. Using the latest measurement engine firmware with older versions of the onboard software should work however a re-initialisation of the measurment engine or a restart of the sensor may be required if Glonass tracking is not working.
